To the editor:
In his March 11 column in the Alexandria Times, “#Reunited2021,” Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings, Ed.D takes a victory lap for getting 1,300 kids back into school. Local private schools have been lauded for their hybrid models.
Your own editorial page survey finds that only 27% of respondents are “thrilled to have some in-person learning,” while more than half believe the number 1,300 to be a “very small step.”
I call your attention to the website cal.burbio.com/school-openings. There, you will find a U.S. map highlighting the degree to which each county is reaching the goal of full in-person learning. You can draw your own conclusions about how well our schools are serving our kids.
