Which School Was That?
To the Editor,
Re: How We Voted. . . ., p. A3, November 6-12, 2008.
Gosh, did I really vote at the Douglass McCarthur School? All along Ive been under the impression that the School was named after the WWII hero, Douglas MacArthur. Live and learn.

Something Stinks
To the Editor,
I would like to bring up an indelicate subject. To be specific, I am referring to the ghastly odors that are inundating our beautiful city from Blue Plains, the Washington, D.C., Waste Management Treatment Center. Blue Plains is directly across the Potomac River from another nuisance to Alexandria, the Mirant Plant.
My wife and I have lived in North Old Town since June of 1993. The revolting odors from Blue Plains, intermittently a nuisance, have escalated and become unbearable. Specifically, on the night of Saturday, October 11, the smell spread as far away as the Braddock Road Metro and beyond. On the night of October 23, with all of our windows completely closed due to the cold temperatures, the smell permeated our house even through the closed windows.
Are they dumping raw sewage into the Potomac? Any boater can see the algae blooms through the shallow waters on that side of the river below the Treatment Center. Can the City of Alexandria do anything about this? This is affecting the quality of life in our city and we deserve better.

Far Out
To the Editor,
An Open Letter to President-elect Obama:
Dear President-elect:
As you, Sen. Obama, prepare to take office, you have the opportunity to create a presidential legacy of astronomical proportions.
Considering that the worldwide UFO-E.T. presence wont go away quietly into the night, and that certain government agencies (including the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of the Navy) have known this cosmic fact of life for decades, Im asking that one of your first presidential acts be the appointing of a Presidential Commission on UFO-E.T. Disclosure.
The proposed commissions charter would focus on such goals as:
Promptly ending the world governments truth embargo on the reality that some of the reported unidentified flying objects represent hardware from elsewhere. A governments telling the truth to the public never has been a matter of partisan politics.
As President Carter began his tenure, he received several thousand letters from Earth citizens of all walks of life, urging him to apply his knowledge, experience, and authority toward ending officialdomsDeepest Secret: that we share the universe with other sentient beings.
Likewise, President Reagan publicly expressed his view that the reality of advanced extraterrestrial life forms could have a unifying (if not a calming) effect upon Earths rampant tribalism.
And President Clinton formally sought access to agencies hard-core evidence of UFO reality during his tenure, his former chief of staff (and now your transition teams chief) John Podesta famously noting that the public can handle the truth.
Bringing some of the best minds, professional talent, and accomplishments from government and the private sector to bear on coordinating the publics stakeholdership in sharing and exploiting the knowledge of UFO-E.T. reality.
At its most local level, the disclosure-acceptance process already has begun in Americas heartland. The leaders of that grassroots project are charting a course easily adaptable and extendable by the proposed presidential commission. Im talking about Denvers proposed ballot initiative to create and operate within that city an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission (see its web site at http://www.extracampaign.org ).
History shows e.g., as with the U. S. civil rights movement that a nations governors occasionally must be prodded into action by the governed. President Johnsons legacy on this principle stands as a beacon by which you, sir, may bring official, worldwide UFO-E.T. disclosure to fruition.
By the stroke of a pen, your executive order establishing the sought-for commission can set in motion a chain reaction beneficial to all citizens of Earth. The moment for this paradigmal shift in UFO-E.T. awareness can never be more ripe. Please seize it promptly and thereby help us all reap its rewards.
Thank you for accepting this challenge among the many facing your administration. And good luck in helping fulfill an awakening publics role in the cosmos.
