City schools finish in top 10 at state wrestling tourney

Episcopal led the way for Alexandria’s private school wrestling squads at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association finals last weekend in Richmond. The Maroon finished in second place, 112 points behind winners St. Christopher’s and 30 points clear of third place. Bishop Ireton came in fifth with 155.5 points and St. Stephen’s / St. Agnes was ninth on 123 points.

The Maroon were led by state-championship efforts from Henry Eshleman (189 pounds) and Alex Henry (285), while also picking up crucial points with Quinn Caslow’s (119) second-place result and third-place finishes from Armour Shaw (136), Hunter Fairchild (152) and Will Stokes (215).

Elliot Mondragon (103) topped the Cardinals’ efforts with his third-place finish and the team added to its total with nine other top-10 placements.

Senior Tyler Haley (130), the No. 2 seed in his weight class, buoyed the Saints with his second-place result. St. Stephen’s also notched three fifths and a seventh at the meet.

The teams wrap up their seasons this weekend at the National Prep Schools Tournament at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
