The St. Stephen’s / St. Agnes girls lacrosse team has been a constant presence atop the rankings of the region’s best. That it would continue this year, really, comes as no surprise. And while not a total surprise, the St. Stephen’s boys team is also in the upper echelon of lacrosse squads this year in the Washington area.

The boys, with a 14-2 record through Tuesday night, are currently the No. 7 team in the weekly rankings put out by the Washington Postand second in their own Interstate Athletic Conference. Their only two losses came against conference foes Bullis and No. 1 Georgetown Prep a 6-5 overtime defeat. Close on their heels in the IAC is Episcopal at 10-3.

The Saints girls, 18-2 going into Tuesday’s matchup with Georgetown Visitation, have gotten a combined 181 goals from attackers Reilly Woodman (70), Carly Reed (57) and Taelor Salmon (54). Coach Kathleen Jenkins’ squad has not lost a game since April 1 and remains undefeated against Virginia competition.

The Episcopal girls (15-1) are also undefeated since April Fool’s Day. Their 17-5 win against Maret on Tuesday pushed their winning streak to nine in a row. The Maroon are undefeated in the A Division of the Independent School League and holding down the pole position there.

The Bishop Ireton girls, though 10-6 overall, are 5-1 in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, good enough for second place in the league standings behind area No. 3 Good Counsel.

Senior Janet Tela has led the Cardinals on the field this spring and became the team’s all-time leading goal-scorer last Friday with a four-goal outing against Robinson that put her at 188 goals and counting. Ireton wraps up its regular season Friday against Flint Hill.
