The Alexandria Crew Boosters got their hands dirty collecting litter along a stretch of the Potomac River by Oronoco Bay Park on Saturday as part of an international coastal cleanup campaign.
About 60 student-athletes, parents and crew program supporters participated in the annual event, organized by the Ocean Conservancy, Clean Virginia Waterways initiative and City Hall. They pulled Styrofoam, plastic bottles, a tricycle, empty barrels and a car tire from the waterway in the effort.
“Alexandria crew is used to cleaning up on the water,” said ACB Co-President Karen Lemke. “This was an opportunity to clean up on land.”
Students lending a hand earned two volunteer hours and a letter of participation for their work, she said.
