The Bishop Ireton Cardinals picked up a 20-18 victory over Archbishop Carroll last Friday at Fannon Field in a game that was at least as tight as the final margin would suggest.

The host Cardinals jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead against the Lions, capitalizing on two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Oliver Noon and one costly Carroll mistake. Already holding a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, Ireton senior corner Doug Vines intercepted a Carroll pass at his own 3-yard line and returned it 97 yards for the score.

The Lions clawed back into the contest in the second half with three touchdowns of their own, but failed to convert on any of their extra-point chances, something that cost them dearly by the final whistle. The Cardinals (1-0) take on Riverdale Baptist this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fannon Field.
