With a dose of inter-city bragging rights on the line, the Bishop Ireton Cardinals rebounded from their first loss of the season last Saturday with a 19-7 win at St. Stephens/St. Agnes.

The Cardinals (3-1) held a 12-0 lead for most of the second half until the Saints (2-1) scored their first points of a game on Alex Edwards 3-yard touchdown run and the ensuing Ryan Garikes extra point with a little less than eight minutes to play.

The Saints continued to threaten down the stretch, but the Cardinals sealed the game when Moses Webb returned an errant St. Stephens pass 57 yards for a touchdown with just 43 seconds remaining. Webbs interception was the Saints fourth turnover to an Ireton defense that conceded several lengthy drives but refused to break down.

Ireton running back Doug Vines led the offense, notching a 3-yard touchdown on the ground in the first quarter and a 46-yard TD catch in the second quarter. Vines ended up with 117 yards on 17 carries for the Cardinals, who host Bullis this Saturday at Fannon Field.

The loss and Saturdays rain put a damper on the Saints 2-0 start to the season as well as the schools homecoming festivities. Now 2-1, the Saints take on Randolph Macon Academy this Saturday in Front Royal.
