Cannons boomed and smoked in Arlington on Sunday signifying the start of the 34th Annual Marine Corps Marathon The Peoples Marathon and 10K. The 26.2-mile course through Arlington and Washington included 713 Alexandrians running, walking and hand-cranking their way to the finish line among more than 22,000 total participants. The 10-kilometer contest included 340 locals.
Alexandrian Linda Kennedy, 49, finished first overall among women in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 46:51. James Smith of Alexandria, 26, finished second overall in the same race, finishing in 32:59. 

In the marathon, Alexandria resident Andrew Rolph represented the citys top finisher in 18th place with a time of 2:35:26. Resident Robert Bahr, 59, rode the course on a hand-crank a cycle used by paraplegics and amputees without the use of their legs in 5:47:42.

John Mentzer, 33, of Kittery, Maine was the first male to finish the marathon, running it in 2:21:47. He became the first Mainer to win the marathon in its history. 

Ethiopian Muliye Gurmu, 25, finished the race in 2:49:48, which was the top time for women.
