Filipino-American and Alexandria native Nate Burkey led the Philippines national soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Sri Lanka in Wednesdays FIFA World Cup qualifier game.
Burkey, 25, scored with a well-placed headshot in the matchs 49th minute to avenge an earlier goal made by Sri Lankas Chathura Gunaratne. Gunaratne scored on a free kick in the games 40th minute.
Its Burkeys first international goal and throughout the day his name was trending on Twitter in the Philippines. The former charter school teacher joined the Azkals earlier this year, in time to play in their first World Cup qualifying game in a decade.
The team will return to Manila for a rematch with the Sri Lankans on July 3. To advance in the qualifiers, the Azkals must beat their Sri Lankan rivals or hold them to a scoreless draw.
