Winning the Independent Schools League title will serve as the high water mark for the 2011 St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes Saints after they fell to Trinity Episcopal in the opening round of the state tournament Tuesday.
The Saints clinched the local championship title with a stunning 4-3 overtime victory against backyard rival Episcopal earlier this month, earning them a fifth seed in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament.
But a fourth-seeded Trinity Episcopal team limited the high-scoring Saints to a single goal in regulation time. With two goals of their own, Trinity Episcopal won the right to challenge Norfolk Academy in the VISAA semifinal game Friday.
The winner of that match will face off against either St. Catherine’s or Collegiate in the championship game Saturday.
