After clinching the school’s first Interstate Athletic Conference title for boys soccer, the St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes Saints beat No. 8 seed Collegiate in penalty kicks to open the state tournament Monday.
The 5-3 overtime victory put the Saints, who enjoyed a 12-3 regular season, on a collision course with Cape Henry Collegiate in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association semifinals Wednesday, after the Times’ deadline.
With a win against Cape Henry, the Saints would advance to the championship game, a matchup with broader implications than just a state title — backyard rival Episcopal, which St. Stephen’s swept in the regular season, will square off against Paul VI in the other VISAA semifinal game.
If the No. 3-seeded Maroon knock off the No. 2-seeded Panthers, the two Alexandria schools would see each other for the third time this season at the state championship game in Richmond on Friday.
