Despite being a world away from the Washington metropolitan area, U.S. Army Maj. Shannon Way will compete in the second annual Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon in October.

Way, who competed in the inaugural running of the race, is organizing a shadow race, likely in Fallujah, for deployed American soldiers and their Iraqi counterparts. Organizers are cutting Way a little slack though, allowing him to run the mirror event some eight or so hours earlier to beat the heat.

The 13.1-mile race begins in Mount Vernon and ends across the Potomac in National Harbor on October 2. Proceeds benefit Autism Speaks, Alice Ferguson Foundation and the RunningBrooke Fund, among other organizations.
