Host Titans claim victory in track invitational
The T.C. Williams boys track team put together a successful defense of its home turf on Saturday, winning the T.C. Williams Invitational with 111 points at Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium. The Titans edged out Annandale by 14 points for the top spot, buoyed by several top relay finishes.
The Titans’ 4×800-meter relay crew won the full 10 points, while the 4×100 finished in second place missing the top spot by just 0.19 seconds. The 4×400 relay squad also came in second.
Seniors Malcom Cameron and Darnell Roy finished one-two in the boys long jump for a crucial 18 points and Kentdrick Barnes came in second in the high jump, one of just two athletes to clear the 6-foot mark. Aziz Coker finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.29 seconds. Chelo Abbe also finished second in the 800, missing out on first place by two seconds. Nicholas Ahumada won the 2,000-meter steeplechase
The Lady Titans finished ninth, led by the first-place showing of their 4×800 relay team and junior Maddie Christy’s win in the pole vault.
T.C. teen earns spot on U.S. whitewater team
T.C. Williams junior Liam Malakoff cemented a spot on the U.S. junior whitewater slalom team last week after finishing third in the single-person canoe class at the three-day team selection trials in Wausau, Wisc.
Malakoff’s success means he and his boat will be headed to France this summer to represent the U.S. at the Junior World Championships.
T.C. rowers nab golds
The T.C. Williams crew team brought home four gold medals from the 27-school Ted Phoenix Championship Regatta last weekend, the Virginia Scholastic Championship Regatta for younger boats.
Of the seven T.C. boats competing, the boys Freshman Eight and Third Four, the girls Third and Fourth Eights all placed first to become state champs. The Titan varsity boats will compete Saturday at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships at Sandy Run Regional Park.
Youth track meet two weeks away
The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities’ annual Hershey Track and Field Meet is on for May 16 at Episcopal High School. Registration for the track meet is free, but forms must be turned in to the Youth Sports Office by Friday.
Participants can participate in the events depending on their age group, which is based on their age as of December 31, 2010. Events include sprints of 50, 100, 200 and 400 meters, a 4×100-meter relay, the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, the standing long jump and the softball throw.
Boys and girls ages 7 and 8 can participate in the 50 meters, standing long jump and the softball throw only.This age group will not advance to the district or state meet.
Aces need more host families
The Alexandria Aces are still looking for host families for the upcoming 2010 Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League season. The players, descending on Alexandria from around the country, need a place to sleep and access to a washer and dryer. The Aces can take care of everything else. Alexandria cheerleaders take prizes at city Invitational
The results are in from last month’s Alexandria Invitational Cheerleading Competition at T.C. Williams High School. The competition featured cheerleading teams from Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mount Vernon and William Ramsay recreation centers, and elsewhere in Northern Virginia and Maryland.
Teams competed in threeseparate divisions in front of more than 1,000 people. William Ramsay topped the Pee Wee group, followed by Cora Kelly (second) and Nann
ie J. Lee (third). Old Mill (Md.) took first place in the junior varsity division, beating out Cora Kelly and Patrick Henry.
