A three-way split in city wrestling championship
St. Stephen’s / St. Agnes, Bishop Ireton and Episcopal tied for first place in the Alexandria City Wrestling Championship last Friday hosted by St. Stephen’s. In their opening match the Saints faced off with Episcopal and pulled out two match-deciding pins to knock off the Maroon 40-34. Later in the day the Saints topped T.C. but ended up losing to Ireton.
The Cardinals had three wrestlers finish the quad meet with perfect records of 3-0, with Elliot Mondragon (103), Joe Vitale (145) and Andrew Lutterloh (215) beating all comers. As a team, Ireton knocked off the Titans 52-21, fell to Episcopal in a close 37-27 dual tally and took down the rival Saints 35-22 in their final match of the day.
Episcopal, 2-1 on the day and 9-3 on the season, knocked off Ireton and T.C. (40-21), but the Maroon’s narrow loss to St. Stephen’s ensured the three-way split for first place.
Cardinals cruising in the pool
The Bishop Ireton swim team saw two records fall Saturday at the Seton Invitational in Manassas when Air Force Academy-bound senior Angus MacDonald broke Brian Bitner’s 100-meter freestyle record with a time of 47.31 seconds a record that had stood for 18 years. As if one record wasn’t enough, the men’s 200 freestyle relay team Angus MacDonald, Carey Natoli, Sam Ellis and Ryan Dougherty broke a record set just last February, posting a time of 1:31.28. To date, some 15 Ireton swimmers have qualified for the Catholic National Championships in Philadelphia, as have all of the relay teams.
Sportsmen to name top athletes Tuesday night
On Tuesday, the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club meets once again at the Old Dominion Boat Club (1 King St.) to present its athletes of the month. This week’s meeting will also be Rugby Night and the public is invited to attend no cost, no need to be a member. Be sure to look for the new honorees in the January 21 issue of the Times.
Montrose comes calling
One of the top boys basketball teams in the region and the country pays a visit to T.C. Williams Saturday evening when Montrose Christian squares off against the Titans in one of the most anticipated contests of the season. Last year, Montrose handed T.C. one of only two regular season losses when they topped the Alexandria squad 70-53 in a game at the University of Maryland.
The varsity game will begin approximately 25 minutes after the conclusion of the 6 p.m. jayvee contest. The cost of tickets for the game has been raised to $8 and can only be purchased at the door.
