Sportscaster Wood to air with Sportsmen
This Tuesday, the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club gets to tune in to a radio veteran without touching the dial whenNats’ Extrahost Phil Wood drops in to speak at their monthly meeting.
Wood, a native Washingtonian, has spent his entire career covering the D.C.-Baltimore scene, hosting sports-talk radio shows with a decided emphasis on baseball in addition to varied on-air duties for broadcasts of the Washington Bullets and Capitals, Baltimore Orioles, Colts and Ravens. These days, Wood can be seen on MASN’s Hot Stove Baseball during the off-season, and as co-host of Talkin’ Baseball.
The veteran broadcaster is a past winner of the NSSA Maryland Sportscaster of the Year Award, a “Best of Washington” Award from theWashington City Paper and a James H. Ellery Award winner for broadcaster of the year in the American Hockey League. He’s also been a columnist for the Washington Examiner since its inception.
This week’s festivities get underway at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Old Dominion Boat Club. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Cancellations galore
As if it would come as any surprise after the last week of weather, athletic schedules around the city and the region are bleeding with the red ink of cancellations, postponements and rescheduled dates. Basically, all events planned between last Friday and Wednesday were abandoned with school not in session and many roads still in poor shape.
On top of the list of changes is the Patriot District indoor track championships, which, after being rescheduled from February 3 and 6 to last Tuesday and Wednesday, were cancelled entirely. Pre-qualified individuals and teams advance to the regional meet at George Mason Fieldhouse on February 20.
In other sports, it remains unclear just how the rescheduling will take place and because it’s already that time of year if early playoff rounds will be pushed back. One sport, it seems, did get to compete last week: The Episcopal boys squash team won the Division IV consolation finals in New Haven, Conn.
