Perfect Ice Dogs skate to title

The Northern Virginia Ice Dogs peewee AA junior hockey team ventured to Johnstown, Pa., for a tournament over Presidents Day weekend and struck gold. The Ice Dogs comprised of Alexandria, Arlington, Springfield and Mt. Vernon puck-slappers got off to a fast start in their first game Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Huskies and battled to a 3-2 win over the hometown Jets.

In their third game, the Ice Dogs kocked off the West Seneca Wings of New York to head to the championship game. The Dogs again faced the Johnstown Jets on Monday in the famous Cambria County War Memorial Arena, with Andrew Stone scoring the tournament-winning goal with 11 minutes to play in the third period.

Ireton cheerleaders tops again at Lynchburg meet

After posting a surprise win at the Blue Ridge Classic last year, the Bishop Ireton cheer squad proved their recent success was no fluke, taking home the title again last month at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg.

“The girls were awesome today,” said coach Angela Hope. “I think the fact that people knew who we were gave the girls some confidence that they were a team to beat. We made some adjustments to our routinewhen we arrived and they performed it like champions today.” 

Ireton takes that momentum to this weekend’s Christian Cheerleaders of America championships in suburban Charlotte, N.C. The team finished fifth last year in the national competition.

Lacrosse season underway for Cordia at Yale

Former St. Stephen’s / St. Agnes lacrosse standout Andrew Cordia (2009) began the next step of his sporting life at Yale last week with a 14-7 win against Holy Cross. Cordia, an attacker/midfielder andinsidelacrosse.comtop-100 recruit as a Saint last year, notched an assist for the Bulldogs in the win.
