After a lengthy search, the T.C. Williams High School athletic department last week named Michael Mulherin and Caroline Van den Berg the new head coaches of the boys and girls lacrosse programs, respectively. Both newcomers have already met with their players and began their searches for assistant coaches, the school announced last week.

Van den Berg grew up in Alexandria, played lacrosse at St. Stephens / St. Agnes and played Division I lacrosse on scholarship at Columbia University where she maintained a 3.8 GPA in biology, a school spokesperson said. Last years girls lacrosse squad finished 10-5 after a solid regular season run, but bowed out in the first round of the district playoffs.

Mulherin, the new steward of the boys lacrosse team, is originally from Fairfax. He played high school lacrosse at Paul VI before moving on to play at the U.S. Military Academy, according to the school. The Titan boys finished last season with a 2-11 record, two years removed from its last winning season in 2007.

Both squads begin their seasons in March.
