Tatyana Schremko, a Torpedo Factory Art Center sculptor, last week presented images from her experiences in China at the 2008 Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival where she participated in both the Ice and Snow Sculpture Competitions. The lecture was part of the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center Performance Art and Lecture Series.

The Harbin festival is one of the most famous winter festivals, and attracts tourists as well as competitors from all over the world. Images will be shown not only of the entries in both the ice and snow events, but also of the magnificent ice architecture which the city does every year for this event.

Harbin, near the Siberian border, is the capital of Heilongjang province and is the most northeastern major city in China. Since 1898, when the Chinese Eastern Line of the Trans-Siberian Railway reached Harbin, the city has been an international center, showing strong Russian and European influences. The beautiful Songhua river flows through the center of the city, and this frozen waterway plays a central part in the festival.
