Vaughan rises up the ranks
Deborah Vaughan has been promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Alexandria Sheriffs Office.  Sgt. Vaughan first joined the Alexandria Sheriffs Office in 1986 as a deputy but left in 1994 to join the Virginia Department of Corrections as an ombudsman.  In 2003, she returned to the sheriffs office, where she has served in the court services unit as a bailiff in the General District Court.

She and her husband of 34 years, Marvin Vaughan, also a deputy, commute daily from Troy, Md., to Alexandria.

The parents of two sons, Kevin Vaughan of Brandywine, Md., and Kennon Vaughan of Forestville, Md., the Vaughans have two grandsons.

Lockwood earns a trip to Galapagos
Elizabeth Lockwood, the library media specialist at Alexandria Country Day School, is one of 30 teachers chosen to join the Toyota International Teacher Program in the Galapagos Islands this fall. Nine hundred teachers applied.

Your application stood out with a dynamic personal statement, an innovative impact plan and a creative, interdisciplinary lesson plan, said program director Laura Parker.

The Teacher Program to the Galapagos Islands will take place November 22 – December 6. While on the Galapagos Islands, program participants will have the unique opportunity to work with Galapagueo teachers to design interdisciplinary environmental lessons that will be shared with the education community.

So far I have not had the opportunity to pursue professional development relating to environmental sustainability and stewardship, but it is a personal interest of mine and an interest of many of my students, Lockwood said. Environmental issues make up a large portion of our science curriculum across grades and I would love to be able to facilitate these curricula through my role here.

Ashford named Junior League president
The Junior League of Northern Virginia has named as its new president Tamara W. Ashford of Alexandria. Ashford, who will serve a one-year term through May 2009, succeeds Emily Oehler.

For more than 50 years, the Junior League has actively participated in developing programs and partnering with nonprofit, public and private sector organizations to help improve the lives of underserved families living in Northern Virginia, Ashford said.

A senior advisor to the Commissioner of the Large and Mid-Size Business Division at the IRS, Ashford has lived in Alexandria for 11 years.
