The Most Reverend Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States, celebrated the Holy Eucharist Tuesday evening as part of the ongoing bicentennial celebrations for St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Old Town.

Formally established on November 12, 1809 as a result of a split with what is now known as Christ Church, St. Pauls is in the midst of a year long series of events leading up to next years 200th anniversary of the founding of the church.

Jefferts Schori, who is the first female head of an Anglican denomination anywhere in the world, spoke earlier in the day at the National Press Club and focused her remarks on the importance of putting aside differences and having people of all faiths work together to improve the greater good.

During a question and answer period, Jefferts Schori was also asked what she prays about privately that would surprise people, answering, I pray for people who consider me their enemy. I believe that whenever we face an obstacle in our lives, praying for those who challenge us is a necessary part of our journey.

The historic Eucharistic service at St. Pauls was followed by a sold-out gala dinner celebration at the Virginia Theological Seminary. For more information on the ongoing bicentennial events, visit www.stpaulsepis.com.
