City police have launched an investigation into an early morning fatal shooting involving an Arlington County sheriff’s deputy on the 100 block of Lynhaven Drive on Wednesday.
Reports of a gunshot in the neighborhood adjacent to Route 1 flooded into the police department about 12:45 a.m. Responding officers found a single victim – 22-year-old city resident Julian Dawkins – who was taken to a local hospital and later declared dead. The circumstances surrounding the incident prompted investigators to declare it a “suspicious” death.
Though authorities released few details about the incident, officials said detectives are interviewing Arlington County sheriff’s deputy Craig Patterson, 44, of Alexandria, in connection to the fatal incident. No charges have been filed against the 17-year lawman, and officials continue to urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department’s criminal investigations section at 703-746-6711.
The medical examiners office is working to confirm the cause and manner of Dawkin’s death.
